ABOUT US

Ralph Thorn studied piano with Doris Watts of London, Ontario, attaining his A.Mus Performance. He progressed to playing organ in church, studying with Gordon Atkinson, reaching his A.Mus. For 35 years Ralph worked as a church music director, retiring from regular weekly duties in 2004.

While at university Ralph started working at a music store as their Service Manager. Since going independent in 1975, Ralph has served the London Ontario region, his repair and rebuilding skills sought by music schools, teachers and private owners of pianos.

Always interested in things historical, Ralph has developed a rapport working with and playing early instruments, often working on pianos of the early and mid-19th century. Many other technicians refer projects of this time period to Ralph since special tools, materials and skills are required in this work, including added patience and perseverance for which Ralph is particularly known.

Alongside his full-time piano work, Ralph is involved in many musical and community pursuits. A former Sea Scout leader for 17 years, he was a member of the National Council of Jeunesses Musicales of Canada, a long-time Director and founding President of Jeunesses Musicales of Ontario, a founding Director of the Strathroy District Arts Council, serving as its President for two years. He is a member of the Royal Canadian College of Organists (RCCO) and member of the London Centre Executive, serving on two RCCO London Convention committees and as an instructor for three Pipe Organ Weeks (POW!).

Ralph and his wife Frances met in the Strathroy Chorale, Strathroy community choir, of which he was accompanist from 1969 to 1987, and since 1996 their Music Director. Frances and Ralph sing in the Karen Schuessler Singers, a concert choir in London.
